Ronnie Van Zant. The name evokes images of Southern
pride, determination, genius, and talent. Known for his fearless, independent
nature, it was this same fortitude and inner strength that helped propel Lynyrd
Skynyrd to the top.
Like the late NASCAR driver, Dale Earnhardt, Ronnie was an "intimidator." His commanding stage presence, barefoot performances, and menacing growls earned him the respect and admiration of fans and critics alike.
However, underneath all the machismo was a smart, insightful, and compassionate man. Ronnie's thought-provoking, introspective lyrics inspired millions and reflected his innate ability to relate to the common, working man.
In spite of Lynyrd Skynyrd's enormous success, Ronnie remained the same "Simple Man" he had always been. He was a caring, generous person and an excellent father to his two daughters, Tammy and Melody.
On October 20, 1977, the world lost one of its most talented singer/songwriters. At the tender age of 29, Ronnie Van Zant lost his life in a plane crash over McComb, Mississippi. Though he is no longer with us, his spirit lives on through his timeless music and in the hearts and minds of his family, friends, and fans.
